Pokémon SoulGold Shiny Hunting
Official FAQ and shiny-hunting guide agree: shiny odds are 1/256, there are no shiny locks, and eggs show blue dots. Since v1.2, shiny parents also boost egg odds.
Base odds and the best route
The project’s base shiny rate is 1/256, and there are no shiny locks. That includes gifts, statics, roamers, and NPC trades. Shiny Pokémon also use a distinct battle-frame color, so the result remains visible after the encounter.
The official FAQ adds that the rate is a setting: you can make shinies rarer, at 1/512 or 1/1024, from the in-game options. The FAQ does not list a setting that makes shinies more common than 1/256.
| Method | What changes | Practical action |
|---|---|---|
| Starter case | Preview shows gold ball and shiny sprite | Save in front of the case, inspect, then soft reset. |
| DexNav | Higher chance at streaks of 50 and 100 | Keep the chain alive and target one species at a time. |
| Eggs | Base 1/256; no Masuda Method. A shiny parent raises the odds, two shiny parents raise them further (v1.2). | Breed from a shiny parent and watch for the Day-Care Man’s special message. |
| NPC trade | Can be shiny; 12× normal chance | Save before confirming the trade. |
| Shiny Genome | Guaranteed conversion of an owned Pokémon | Reach 15 trophies and spend the consumable deliberately. |

Egg procedure
- Leave the Day Care running until the attendant has an egg ready.
- Listen for: “This Egg looks quite different from the ones we usually see!” The check happens when the egg is spawned, not when you accept or hatch it.
- Inspect the sprite for blue dots. If the result is not useful, decline the egg and keep walking for the next roll rather than assuming acceptance rerolls it.
- Masuda Method is not enabled, so foreign-language parents do nothing.
- Since v1.2, shiny parents in the Day Care boost the shiny odds of eggs, and two shiny parents boost them more. The official notes do not give an exact rate.
Shiny breeding loop
The parent bonus turns one shiny into a reliable source of more. A practical order:
- Get your first shiny parent from a hunt, a DexNav chain, an NPC trade, or the Shiny Genome.
- Put it in the Day Care with a compatible partner. If you already have a second shiny, use both for the larger bonus.
- Walk until an egg is ready, then decide at the Day-Care Man: accept it only after the special message.
- Each shiny that hatches can become the second shiny parent for the next round.
Statics, gifts, and roamers
- Save immediately before a static encounter or gift. Gift Pokémon preview as shiny when the result is shiny.
- Raikou, Entei, and Suicune are rolled when released during the Burned Tower event. Their shininess does not reroll at every later encounter, so the official guide suggests using the Shiny Genome on them instead.
- For a failed static, reset before interacting rather than saving after the result.
- For NPC trades, save before the exchange and watch the trade animation, which also displays the shiny sprite.
Using the Shiny Genome
The Route 40 gentleman awards the consumable Shiny Genome at 15 trophies. It turns any Pokémon you own into a shiny version, so reserve it for a species that is difficult to reroll, such as the legendary beasts, or for a final team choice. Older guides call this item the “Shiny Patch”. Every Pokémon the gentleman gives can also be shiny, and the preview shows it. The full milestone table is on the achievements page.
