Pokémon SoulGold Walkthrough

There is no official town-by-town walkthrough. This page is a progression outline built only from the official FAQ and feature list. It is not a HeartGold DS walkthrough.

Before you start

  • Patch SoulGold from Hackdex on a legal Emerald ROM.
  • Choose among nine starters. Extra starters come later from Goldenrod Casino Gachapon.
  • Official FAQ: there is no Kanto. Plan a Johto-only run.

Early Johto checkpoints (official FAQ)

  1. Exp. Share is given right before you arrive in Violet City.
  2. DexNav unlocks after obtaining the first set of Poké Balls.
  3. Candy Jar is given by Elm’s aide after the first gym, alongside the egg. It stores extra EXP and converts it to Exp Candy.
  4. Whitney’s gym opens after you complete the Radio Tower quiz on the first floor.
  5. After the third gym, a blocking tree is cleared with the Squirtbottle from the Goldenrod Flower Shop next to the gym.
  6. Battle Factory is accessible after Gym 3 (README / Hackdex).

Key field tools

  • HMs only need to be owned. Fly also needs a Pokémon that can learn it.
  • Strength is at Olivine Cafe. Waterfall is in Ice Path.
  • Fossils come from smashing rocks in the Ruins of Alph.

Midgame and late Johto

  • Mega Ring after the Team Rocket takeover in Goldenrod.
  • Ho-Oh or Lugia is chosen after that takeover via Rainbow Wing or Silver Wing (official legendary guide).
  • Coin Case is in Goldenrod Underground; Gachapon is behind the casino rewards counter (3,000 coins minimum).
  • Tutor move master is in Olivine (top-right house). Egg-move master is in Blackthorn.
