Nine choices

Pokémon SoulGold Starters

SoulGold is not HeartGold or SoulSilver. The official README says you choose from 9 starters, and the official FAQ explains how to get the rest.

The opening choice

The official feature list: 9 starters to choose from, with new Mega Evolutions for starters that were missing them:Typhlosion, Meowscarada, and Primarina. The official docs do not publish a separate numbered table of those nine species on the FAQ page, so this site will not invent the other names.

Official shiny guide: a shiny Elm-lab starter shows a gold-colored ball, and the sprite is shiny when hovered. Soft reset in front of the case.

How to get the other starters

Official FAQ and gift guide: the Gachapon machine in Goldenrod Casino, behind the rewards counter. Minimum entry is3,000 coins. Putting in more coins increases the chance of not receiving a duplicate starter. The gift guide says this machine can award all starters / starters from any generation.

The Coin Case is in the Goldenrod Underground (official FAQ).

Starter Megas

  • Mega Ring: after the Goldenrod Rocket takeover.
  • Starter megastone / bondstone: given by Elm at a certain story point.
  • New starter Megas called out by the README: Typhlosion, Meowscarada, Primarina. Those three also appear under Bondstone on the official Mega list, along with other Bondstone users such as Meganium and Feraligatr.

See the full official table on the Mega Evolutions page.

Not SoulSilver’s three starters

Searches for “Pokémon SoulSilver best starter” are a different game. This hack’s opening set is nine, and later starters are a casino unlock, not a version-exclusive gift.
